A Peek at the Past!

March has been roaring like a lion the past couple of days again, and my jonquils look a bit unhappy in the snow. So, lets go back to last Sunday, when March was being a sweet little lamb, and we took a drive to the tiny town of Maynard, Arkansas.

Maynard has a population of about 380 residents these days. But back in 1910, it was a big town of 500 residents!

A Directory of Randolph County published in 1910 gives this description of Maynard "The town of Maynard located twelve miles north of Pocahontas among the foothills of the Ozarks, just south of the Missouri line, is a thrifty town of about five hundred inhabitants and is beautifully located, and the healthy record, good drainage, moral tone and hospitable people make it an ideal town in which to reside. There are no saloons or bad influences thrown out to people in that section which are demoralizing, not only to the residents but to the visitors to this beautiful little place." This same perspective holds true today, according to the updated directory!

The big attraction in Maynard is the Maynard Pioneer Museum & Park. The log cabin with its natural look is currently getting some work done on it.

This is the second little log cabin in the park, and it's a tiny log House of Worship. The age of this cabin is questionable, some residents remember it as being an old cabin back in 1922.

Here it is again, a tiny House of Worship, of the past.

And another attraction is the old concrete jail. A 6’X10’ structure was erected around 1936 and was in use until 1953. The door of the jail is made of old wagon rims. The little jail served its purpose for many years, and they say those who spent a night there, never wanted to return! From the looks of it, one can see why.

Although the Museum was not open for its Log Cabin tours, these Log Cabin tours take people back to the era of the founders of the community, when pioneers were struggling to make homes for their families. The furnishings of their homes and the farm equipment they used will tell you that were hard-working people.

I enjoyed my visit to the Pioneer Museum and Park on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and I hope you enjoyed this peek at the past in the tiny town of Maynard, Arkansas.

Have a blessed week, everyone!

Good Morning Again Ms. Renie,
I thought I would come back for a refill on my coffee. LOL. Your jonquils looks a bit cold there. The Snow on them are pretty tho. I'm not sure that we got 5 or 6 inches of Snow, but one of my blogging friends that doesn't live too far from me in Bay, said they got about 6 inches, so since we don't live far apart, I'm guessing the same. I just looked out my door again and the Sun looks to be coming up. The Snow is so pretty. I have a BIG drift in front of my door outside. I enjoyed the History of Maynard and seeing the pictures. I used to have a Great-Aunt that lived in Rector and I think some of her kids lived in or around Maynard. It is on my Mom's side of the Family. I've been to Maynard but it was years and years ago. The town I live in now has one of those jails. It is up on Main Street. I may just have to take a picture of it sometime and show it. I have no excuse now for not taking pictures. LOL. I'm glad your Son made it there safely. I do hope yall will have a good day going out, but please be careful. My DH is still asleep, so when he wakes up and looks outside, I will know if we will be moving or not. I'm doubting it tho. Take care my friend and "THANK YOU" for the refill. It's always good to have coffee with you of the mornings. May God Bless You and Yours.

Love & Hugs,
Karen H.

Morning, Karen,

Yes, the sun is up and shining brightly on our frigid morning. It should help melt some of the snow, but it will remain cold today.

I'm glad you got some snow, although it came at the wrong time for you. Maybe you can move today anyway.

I enjoyed visiting Maynard, and drive through there often on my way to Pocahontas. It sure is a tiny town, but quaint.

Enjoy the snow and take lots of pictures with your new camera. Have a wonderful weekend, my friend.

Nice pictures!
I love the cabin in Maynard.
I have a great picture of you and Nichole on the porch somewhere.
careful taking pictures outside.

Renie Burghardt said...

Oh, yeah, there is an old picture on the porch of the log cabin, taken several years ago, when Nichole was just a wee girl! That's the cabin I don't have a picture of here, because it's being worked on. Hey, our snow melted today, unlike the snow in your part of the country. Shall I post the poem my old friend Maria sent me? Okay, why not:

Winter in Ohio
It's winter in Ohio
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At twenty-five below.
Oh, how I love Ohio
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Ohio
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground!!

Ah, me, I'd better stop complaining about our weather!

Renie,

Thanks for taking us along with you to Maynard. That jail is a awesome. I don't blame anyone for not spending a second night there. Maybe this is how we should hold prisoners today. You think it would cut down on crime? LOL

Congratulations on winning the Watkins basket giveaway from Mississippi Songbird. I know you are going to love it.

Blessings,
Mary

Dear Renie ~~ I enjoyed reading of your visit to Maynard. The log cabin is wonderful, but not so the jail is
scary. And maybe there should be more like it to deter crime.
Take great care my friend, the Snow must soon end for you. Love, Merle.

Renie Burghardt said...

Mary,

Yes, that jail would be a good deterent today, wouldn't it? LOl. Problem is, it's too small. These days, there is so much more crime.

I was pleasantly surprised that I won the Watkins Easter Basket. I look forward to receiving it.

Thank you for stopping by. I am running late here. Have a great Sunday!

Dear Merle,

Our snow has melted once again, and I hope it's the last of it this winter. Unusual weather though, this year, at least around here.

Thank you for coming by, dear Merle. I hope your Sunday has been pleasant and the new week will be nice.

Good Morning Ms. Renie,
I'm dropping by to have some coffee with you this morning. I hope I'm not too early. Tell your Son he can join us as well. LOL. Most of our Snow melted yesterday. When my DH left out this morning, there was still a bit left but I'm sure it will all melt before the day is over with as temperatures are suppose to be near 50 degrees today. Then by mid-week, it's suppose to be in the 60's. I want to get off this rollercoaster ride. LOL. I put some pictures up today of the girls outside in the Snow yesterday. I took the first picture and then my DH hogged the camera pretty much all day yesterday. LOL. I hope you and your Son had a wonderful day yesterday. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours. "THANK YOU" for the coffee this morning.

Love & Hugs,
Karen H.

liked Bob Hope. My Sunday is over and I am off to bed, but had a nice day, a friend called in and so did my son John. I hope you have a happy day, my friend. Take care, Love, Merle.

Renie,

Gotta love that old cabin! Maynard sounds like a cute little town - back in the day, sounds unusual not to have at least 1 saloon in the town. And the old jail - funny to look at it today, but it probably did a better job at deterring crime than today's modern jails with all of their spiffy accomodations...the flip side of the coin is that the older jails were easier to escape from.

Congrats on your Watkins win - let us know how well the products are!

Deborah,

Well, there are 2 cabins. The larger one is getting a new roof, so it's all covered with plastic. The small one was a church originally. The little jail is kind of quaint, isn't it? LOL

Well, as for saloons, have you ever heard of a Dry County? Randolph County, Arkansas, where Maynard is located,is a Dry County. So there are no saloons anywhere in the county. I think Arkansas is one of the few states that still has Dry Counties. No liquor is allowed to be sold anywhere in the county. That is why Missouri has a Liquor Store right on the state line! LOL.

I will let you know about the products in the Watkins Easter Basket. They sound wonderful. I am especially looking forward to trying the lavender firming lotion! LOL.

Thanks for coming by. Hope your weekend went really well.

Renie,

Georgia also had dry counties, probably still do, can't think of any right off hand...But today is a lot different than in the old days. Now folks who want to drink will just drive to the next county - the automobile has made everything so convenient.

But, I have a pic of an old timey saloon that I took last year in Tn. I posted it for you on my blog.

Good Morning Ms. Renie,
I'm dropping by for our morning coffee and I hope I'm not too early. I've been awake since around 1:00a.m. I sure don't like this time change. LOL. About the time I get used to it, it all changes again. LOL. We didn't get to move over the weekend because of the Snow. The Highway Department cleared the main highways, but the side streets still had some Snow on them and especially in shaded areas. My DH didn't want to take any chances of anything falling off of the trailer we were going to use. If it doesn't rain, we will start moving Friday morning when my DH gets in for the weekend. Hopefully by Saturday we will have everything moved. Yesterday was a beautiful day here as well. It was a tad bit windy, but not too bad. We still have some snow here but it will all be melting away this week. "CONGRATULATION'S" on winning Stephanie's Giveaway. I know you are excited about receiving it. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours. "THANK YOU" for the coffee as always it's nice to enjoy a cup with you.

Love & Hugs,

Deborah,

That old saloon in Mouse Creek/Niota is pretty small! LOL. And I am surprised Georgia still has dry counties. I'll have to Google it and see how many other southern states still have it. I enjoyed your post about the Mouse Creek Saloon.

Have a great day!

Good morning, Karen,

Always nice to have you stop by for coffee! I don't like the time change either. I was tired all day yesterday because we lost that hour. LOL.

All our snow is gone. It was a beautiful day yesterday. Well, it turned out to be a bad day for me, because my friend Eileen didn't come to church as usual, so I drove to her house after church to check on her and found out she had fallen. Greg and I took her to ER. She has a fractured wrist, and I will be taking her to her doctor this morning.

Since you won't be moving very far, you can work on it all week, and get the big part done this weekend. Hopefully, now that you got some snow, Spring will be moseying in, to our part of the planet. Have a wonderful week!

Love and Hugs,

Renie

PS. It was a nice surprise to win that beautiful Easter Basket. I can't wait to get it, and will take a picture of it when it arrives.

Karen H. said...

Good Morning Ms. Renie,
I'm sorry to hear about your Friend, Eileen, falling. I do pray that she got a good report when you took her to the doctor yesterday. I'll keep her in my prayers for a fast recovery. It was another beautiful day yesterday but a bit on the windy side. I was out in it yesterday afternoon and last night and my feet got so cold last night. When my feet get cold, my whole body gets cold as well. I was glad to get home last night and get in my warm bed. LOL. They say we could get up to around 70 by tomorrow or Thursday. There is also a chance of rain on Thursday and Friday as well. I hope it doesn't rain on Friday so we can get our move over with. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours.

Love & Hugs,
Karen H.

Goo morning, Karen,

The report on Eileen isn't the best, but she will be seeing and orthopedic sugeon on Thursday, as she may need pins in her wrist. She is a bit depressed about it, and we'll find out more Thursday.

Yes, we had a beautiful day yesterday. And today will be sunny and beautiful again. Soon, it will be time to complain about the heat, won't it? LOL.

I hope it doesn't rain this weekend so you can move. Thank you for coming by for coffee. Have a wonderful day, dear Karen.

I hope your friend Eileen is okay. Did they find anything out about her at the doctor? Hasn't the weather just been beautiful this week? It was very nice yesterday and I even turn my A/C on around noon. LOL. I turned the heat back on this morning tho. It got up to 72 degrees yesterday. They are calling for a 90 percent chance of rain for tomorrow. My next door neighbor is going to help me start moving some heavy things this afternoon. He has a doctor's appointment this morning.
